Bridging OER's Last Mile Divide: How Emerging Technologies Can Bring Low-Cost Resources into the Classroom

Join former Chronicle of Higher Education editor Jeff Selingo for a discussion about the future of digital content in higher education and what some institutional leaders are doing to improve access and affordability.

Panelists

- Jeff Selingo, Award-Winning Higher Education Author and Journalist

- Michael Horn, Founder, Christensen Institute and Principal Consultant, Entangled Solutions

- Hon. Bev Perdue, 73rd Governor of North Carolina

- Dr. Leslie Kennedy, Director of Affordable Learning Solutions, MERLOT and the California State University System

- Mark Triest, President, Intellus Learning

In 2012, the 3,793 academic libraries in the U.S. had 253 million e-books and spent over $1.5 billion on electronic serial subscriptions. Billions more have been spent to develop Open Educational Resources (OER). Yet student surveys continue to find that cost and affordability limit student access to course materials, demonstrating a clear divide between available resources and the students who need them.

So how can technology help university systems and institutions address these discoverability and access challenges? This webinar will examine how academic leaders are using emerging technologies to unite digital libraries, OER and licensed content under a single platform for more efficient use by faculty and students.

April 21, 2016 from 2:00pm - 3:00 p.m. EST

Register for the webinar.

The June webinar topic will focus on how the campus bookstores facilitate cost savings’ strategies on course materials for CSU students.   For example, the SDSU bookstore’s  Immediate Access / Opt Out Textbook pilot has significantly lowered course materials’ costs by negotiating a set price for students in selected courses.

Todd Summer, SDSU’s bookstore director and Sandy Ehrhorn, AL$ special consultant will share an overview of how your campus might approach a similar cost saving’s model.  They will also address how your campus store can add value and contribute unique skills to your campus’ AL$ efforts.

Webinar Outline:

  • Sandy Ehrhorn @ the Chancellor’s Office AL$ and Todd Summer @ SDSU Aztec Shops will share the strategies the campus bookstore can facilitate reducing the cost of course materials for your students.

Date & Time:  Wednesday, June 1 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm
