Putting Educational Innovations into Practice.

Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself.  We have a number of people who are doing GRAPE Camp asynchronously and you can communicate with them this way.

Yes.  Actually they are for teaching Japanese, so I hope that is what you are interested in.  http://www.merlot.org/merlot/materials.htm?category=2481&&;

Our World Languages Classics winner last year is at the top of the list.

I am copying an email that someone sent so I can provide the answer to everyone.  My responses are bold and italic.

I read over the policy on peer review and have two (2) questions for you.  I don't know if I should have placed these questions in Voices for anyone else who might have the same questions, but I couldn't tell where, in Voices, people from our group "July 15th" was listed.  The "Summer 2011" discussion thread had posts from back in June.  Anyhow, here are my questions:  You can tell by the date when it was added.  I thought you might want to also read some of the comments of people from last month's GRAPE Camp.  If you click on the Follow below this message, you will be notified by email when someone makes a comment.  You can then click on the link and follow it to the latest messages.

1)  Under "Stage 2" of section #2 -- Conduct Evaluations for notes on PEER REVEW PROCESS, it reads that "Peer reviewers will write peer reviews in Workspace..."  Where is this "workspace" that is being referred to?  Workspace is a private part of MERLOT open only to people participating in MERLOT Peer Review. You will be introduced to this during the third week of GRAPE Camp.  When you become a Peer Reviewer, you will always have access to Workspace.

2)  Under the section on "Merlot Peer Review Report" #1 -- Description asks for Technical Requirements...  As a peer reviewer, am I understanding correctly that I would be a part of the "Editorial Board" and if so, where would I find information on the "technical requirements" needed to use the software.  Our Editorial Board Members have additional responsibilities than just Peer Reviewing.  You will be invited to be on the Editorial Board, but that means you are also responsible for adding materials to MERLOT, participating in twice weekly conference calls, and in general, promoting MERLOT at your institution and at professional associations.  If you just want to review materials, you can participate as a Peer Reviewer only.

Regarding the technical requirements, it is only something such as needed software, i.e. Flash, Quicktime, etc.  We will talk about that on Friday's session.  In reviewing the material, you will usually discover what is needed to use the software, but sometimes it is on the material's site.

I've been looking at the Ohio ESL website in Merlot and I'd like to make comments to it, but I want to make sure I am clear on these 2 points before I do.  I hope that is clear to you now.

Just one more question regarding finding Voices on the Merlot site.  I had to dig around to get to Voices, and then found the url http:voices.merlot.org, but I'm wondering if there is a link to Voices right on the Merlot homepage.  I couldn't find one.  Since Voices is a commercial site, we can't have one sign-in access to it.  One must join Voices, which is simple to do.  Also, someone else asked me about why you have to wait to be approved for Voices.  We used to  have open access, and then people who had joined Voices were spammed, with some racy emails from people.  So, we closed it and then had to have approval.  We opened it one more time, but again, another young lady spammed the MERLOT Voices Members, so we had to close it.  My suggestion, as explained above, is to click on Follow below the box at the beginning.  That way, you will get an email when someone replies, and it will go right to it.

We have, I believe, 78 different communities in MERLOT Voices...you can see some of them listed on the right.  You are welcome to create one of your own, once you are a Member of Voices.

Cathy, I don't see the "follow" key that you are referring to --"below the box at the beginning" that you refer to in this email.  I'd like to follow conversations in this discussion.  I did "join" the discussion, maybe that will do the trick.  Thanks.  Marjorie

If you click on Follow (above picture) it will send you an email each time someone posts here and you will be sent exactly to the new post.
Thanks, Cathy.  I found it after sending you that message.  The clue word was "beginning."  I went back to the first page and saw that I was already following because it gave me the option of "unfollow."  It must have worked when I "joined."  Thanks, Marjorie
Hi everyone, I am Cathy Dawson, and although I registered to participate asynchronously in camp, I hope to be able to join in for some of the sessions. I am on faculty in the Occupational Therapy department at Tuskegee University and am currently completing my dissertation for a PhD in Health Care Administration through Capella University.
Welcome, Cathy.  (Glad to see you spell your name the right way.  :-))  I know our Health Sciences Editorial Board will welcome your talents.  I hope you will be able to join us live on one of the next two sessions.
Hi, my name is Thea van de Mortel. I am an academic staff member at Southern Cross University, Australia. I teach in the areas of pathophysiology, microbiology and infection control to nursing students primarily.
Welcome, Thea.  We're happy to have someone from "Down Under" attend GRAPE Camp.  I know you'll find a lot of materials in MERLOT, some in the Biology area and some in Nursing (covered in Health Sciences).  Please let me know if you have any questions.

I received the following question from someone and thought I'd share it in case others are wondering, too:

I have been going in and making member comments but it does not look like they are saving.  Is there a way to know if they have?  I did save my comments per the directions but I am not getting the results in the directions.

You should be able to go to My Profile (yours) and it will have a link to what you submitted, including comments.  Click on that and it will list your three comments.

Hello all

I am Tim Riessen, (haven't uploaded a pic yet). I am from Perth in Western Australia.  I teach at a vocational college, Central Institute of Technology.  Not being entirely familar with the US education system I think this is similar to a community college.

I teach Digital Media, including interface design, web page design, use of digital imaging software to simple games programming.

I use a range of online tools to interact with students.  From this I have a role in assisting staff to develop skills in the area of online delivery and assessment.  I have an interest in multimedia based activities to assist teaching.  This comes both from wanting to use in the class, and as examples that my graduating students can aspire to.
