Hello faculty development group! I am working on a professional development community commons on MERLOT specifically aimed at Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive recipients. These are graduate students at institutions around the country who are being supported by the program since they are promising potential future California State University faculty. Rather than work in parallel, I will most definitely be looking for ways to link more directly with all of the faculty development work underway already on the site. We are providing information on teaching, research and service, so perhaps we could think about expanding our FD sites to a broader look at the work of faculty, what do you think?

School of Information Technology and Communication Design at California State University Monterey Bay is trying develop more online degrees. It is difficult to provide systematic training and workshop to our faculty, who are welling to do it. Any ideas?

Hi, I live in the beautiful Rockies of Colorado. I'm just learning to navigate around this site. Since I'm part of the Editorial Board for Fac Dev, thought I'd join here too. I work at Colorado Mountain College. I coach faculty in the use of Blackboard and Elluminate Live! from an educational rather than technical perspective. Frequently, I use an Elluminate Live! session, have them share their desktops and coach them on using Blackboard. With locations throughout the state (anywhere from Leadville, to Steamboat Springs, to Glenwood Springs, to Rifle), this allows me to deliver just-in-time training when they need it.

What are the most effective ways you are working with faculty in terms of increasing student engagement? Techniques, models, strategies, technologies...

Greetings everyone:

I've recently complete a doctoral study of best practices in online learning communities, and I'm now part of the design team for an online faculty development program at Granite State College in NH. There's lots of evidence that online communities of practice such as Voices can be very effective learning environments, and we're considering a similar model as a "Faculty Commons" with discussion forums for different academic disciplines and other special interests.

So Voices comes along at a very opportune time for us.

What is the latest on technology and faculty development? This is an area that I am passionate about. I am open to learning all about this.

In India, faculty development in higher education has become a crucial necessity. Efforts of University Grants Commission through its Academic Staff Colleges are proving a drop in the ocean as it largely caters to teachers working in government aided colleges and Universities. A big self- financed sector of colleges and private universities is left unattended. Updating of the skills and knowledge of tremendously big number of college teachers in India is largely unattended. Phenomenal rise in number of colleges and universities during last 15 years has led to recruitment of sub- standard faculty in self- financed sector due to dearth of employable, experienced and good teachers. Many individual professors are also offering Customized Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) in India to college clusters. India is presently a big emerging market for high quality FDPs in higher, professional and technical education.
