Curriculum and Standards

In our current educational culture, the success of teachers is first judged by whether we 'meet the standards'. While having measurable items that can help us determine if we are getting to the content students should know, standards alone won't guarantee we are truly being successful. This morning I had an 'aha' that made the place of standards in teaching more concrete to me:

If I were to build a house, I would certainly want my house to meet all the construction standards - the… Continue

I am loving seventh grade! That's the grade I want to focus on. I am teaching on Saturdays at Willow International. Everything is melding together, I am a little frazzled with all my classes that I have to take and all the assignments due though.
Your class was so great to observe, the kids too. Hope you are doing well.

I'm at Computech with Mark Kirste.

I might see you at Science Olympiad, I am judging the robo-cross tournament.

Well I got an internship with Parlier Jr High School. I'll be teaching 7th life science, and 8th physical science (which I have nothing for!!). I'm happy and relieved, but a little annoyed in the fact that I will be teaching physical science, I wasn't told that prior to signing the contract. But its a contract though!! :-)

I was there Friday turning in a final for one of my classes. Yeah my student teaching is over, but I'm still 'volunteering' my time with him, still teaching my two classes, the kids have bonded with me and won't let me leave. We have a big field trip towards the end of the year which will be fun, its in the Mojave desert!

Well you know, after this week I have to say this is the MOST useful workshop I've ever been to and that's a lot. If you asked me last week

I would have said oh no let me stop listening to the socratic method. So thank you, this led to the great earth science lesson planning we've done.

This really surprised me. I was so frustrated I didn't think I belonged. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you a workshop full of inspiration. I am anxious to start the year and try whiteboards, etc. This is how I have always wanted to teach science but was unable to break through the 'this is how we always do it' mode at my school and in myself.

I am taking any resources I can get now! I am starting to be okay about it, turns out that the physical science at Parlier is not that in depth, due to the fact that the students don't have much prior science taught to them, nor the knowledge. So in some aspects its like teaching from scratch.
I am going to a chemistry workshop on Monday, are you by chance teaching that? Hopefully I'll get some good ideas!
How are you doing by the way? Do you start school on the 17th too?

I would love to go to the workshops, they are probably on Saturdays? I teach on sat 8-2 for the fall semester.
I would love to take a look at the book too.
