One course almost all college students must take is a general education life science course with a lab. The CSU already has a jump on the development of inquiry-based learning objects with the software in Biology Labs OnLine and the Virtual Courseware Project. Would it make sense to pick these "low hanging fruit" as a first step in the development of an open core courseware offering for non-majors biology?
Hi Bob,
Thanks for your message and CONGRATUATIONS on your OUTSTANDING FACULTY AWARD!

The use of open virtual labs in blended learning is a "best practice" and the key is to provide a currently working model that others can adopt. Are you teaching a GE life sciencs course with a lab that is using these tools and do you have evidence that the students are succeeding in the learning (and passing the course at higher rates)?
I do not teach nonmajors biology nor do I have evidence of the effects of using of courseware in these courses. Maybe there are other in the CSU who do?

Thanks for the congrats! I received the President's Distinguished Professor Award which is given to former recipients of the Outstanding Professor's Award. (I got the OPA in 1998.)
Thanks Bob - the evidence will be a key factor IMO. If/when we get folks interested in this project, the evidence will be important to share.

Pretty cool being outstandingly distinguished!
